NO CLEAR BASIS FOR EXPECTED 4M TOURISTS!

I have very strong reservations on the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) 4-million tourist arrival forecast for this year.

But believe me, people, I sure hope they can attain it. That will mean more jobs and livelihood opportunities.

At 365 days a year, four million tourists mean an average of 10,000 arrivals a day. Honestly, I don’t know if this is a normal expectation in the travel industry or a little too high.

But in the DOT press release which you will find today, Feb. 5, in the Philippine Star, no physical basis was cited for the optimistic forecast other than statistics from last year’s tourist arrivals.

For example, NO SPECIFIC or DETAILED safety and protection measures or programs were cited.

No perks or come-ons for tourists were mentioned.

No big event which tourists can look forward to was announced. Neither was there anything new about the Philippines which could help arouse the curiosity of tourists and lure them to our country.

What was noted instead was the recent travel advisory of the United Kingdom to its citizens against going to the Philippines.

Considering the economic problems of various countries worldwide, travelers will surely look for a destination which can give them their money’s worth.

And they’ll only choose among countries which tell them SPECIFICALLY what can they expect should they decide to visit. Not the generic statistics from last year’s arrivals.

The DOT can do better than this. THEY SHOULD!

Let us not all be carried out by the tide of fanaticism and blind partisan belief. Let the prosecutors and the defense do their jobs to prove that in this country, the Constitution is held supreme. The prosecution and the administration started all this brouhaha of "trial outside the impeachment court.” Suddenly, they have one of their biggest blunders, lying, and indirectly point to media as the culprit, Nagkaroon na ng duda sa lahat ng ipalalabas ng prosecution. THE REAL MEANING OF LLAMAS ADMONITION!

Pnoy’s mere admonition of Presidential Political Affairs Adviser Ronald Llamas for buying PIRATED or ILLEGAL DVDs is a SALUTE to two sectors and an EARTH-SHAKING SLAP on both cheeks to five  other groups.

Pnoy saluted video pirates and their outlets or vendors for having their UNLAWFUL product. More insultingly, Pnoy has just bestowed on them the HONOR of having nothing less than a presidential adviser for a customer.

The slap goes to movie stars and other celebrities, movie and TV producers, manufacturers of legitimate DVDs and their outlets,  and most of all, the officers and men of the Optical Media Board (OMB) WHO RISK LIFE AND LIMB in every raid they conduct on video pirates and sellers.

In letting Llamas get away with his SUPPORT of video pirates, Pnoy literally IGNORED the efforts of the OMB in implementing the law on video piracy.

To those who will say that the Llamas issue is an isolated incident, think about these, first:

Llamas ADMITTED BUYING pirated DVDs, even if he’s a presidential adviser who’s supposed to be a role model for righteousness and in the fight against illegality.

But he was NOT PUNISHED for it.

The stall and the mall where Llamas was photographed in the act of buying pirated DVDs were IDENTIFIED in newspaper reports. But neither one was penalized for having the illegal item.

In fairness to the OMB, they’re all out against video pirates. But if the Llamas case is to be followed, the OMB will now have to inquire first if the target of their next raid has Llamas or any other Pnoy aide among its customers.

For movie and TV producers, Pnoy ignored the TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY they spend in safeguarding their films or shows against video pirates.

Worse, Pnoy doesn’t seem to give a damn on the losses they will incur from video piracy.

Related to this, Pnoy has helped destabilize the jobs of TV and movie stars.

Simply because since video pirates got away with the Llamas case,  producers will think a lot longer and deeper before investing tens, if not hundreds, of millions of  pesos again for a new movie or show.

Common sense might tell them it’s cheaper to buy canned films or shows.

For manufacturers of legitimate DVDs, Pnoy ignored the HARD WORK and the capital they spend in coming out with optically-safe and high-quality DVDs.

For their distributors, no less than Pnoy himself has REINVIGORATED the top threat to their businesses. Nothing could be more encouraging to video pirates than the Llamas caper.

From now on, all that video pirates have to do whenever they’ll be arrested or their merchandise seized is claim that these are reserved for Llamas or some other Malacanang official.

These are the realities, people. The Llamas caper is NOT AS SIMPLE as you think it is. 30

'PA-POGI' TIME FOR PNOY!

In the anniversary celebration of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) yesterday, Feb. 3, Pnoy warned  not to test him!

I say,’PA-POGI TIME,’ ladies and gentlemen. SAMPLE nga, Pnoy, kahit isa.

Let me cite just two issues, ladies and gentlemen.

After retaining, and expressing continued trust to, Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas despite being caught in the act of buying PIRATED or ILLEGALY-MANUFACTURED DVDs, Pnoy again plays tough, and righteous.

If Pnoy’s as tough as he poses to be, he should FIRE Llamas, NOW, even if Llamas is a ‘kabarilan’ of his. The pieces of evidence against Llamas --  including pictures and the published first-person account of the reporter who saw him – speak for themselves.

If he’s as righteous as he professes to be, the more should Pnoy fire Llamas for PATRONIZING criminal merchandise, and MOCKING anti-video piracy efforts of his OWN ADMINISTRATION!

Anybody who supports a lawbreaker is just as guilty.

More importantly, Pnoy should go after JUETENG to prove that his ‘tuwid na daan’ exists.

Remember, people, jueteng is still ILLEGAL!

But in the more than 19 months that Pnoy has been President, there has been NO KNOWN SERIOUS, MAJOR  campaign to wipe out jueteng!

NO CRACKDOWN, NO MASS raids on jueteng dens or arrests of bettors and operators, no nothing.

I can only remember Pnoy speaking only ONCE about jueteng, saying that studies on how to deal with jueteng are being conducted. Other than that, NOT ONE WORD against jueteng, as in NONE!

As if he’s BLIND, DEAF AND DUMB (bulag, pipi at bingi) when it comes to jueteng.  As if jueteng is no longer illegal.

Pnoy DIDN’T EVEN ORDER a probe of accusations by anti-jueteng advocate retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz that another of his ‘kabarilans,’ DILG Undersecretary Rico Puno was receiving jueteng bribes.

Anybody correct me if I’m, wrong.

And yet, Pnoy keeps on hammering his ‘tuwid na daan’ into our brains whenever he could. As if we’re fanatics of his that WHATEVER he does or says goes, no questions asked.

Tell that to the marines!

We need a ‘tuwid na daan,’ yes. But a TRULY STRAIGHT ONE, free of customers of unlawful stuff or an UNTOUCHABLE and illegal numbers game.

Not the ‘tuwid na daan’ Pnoy wants us tread!

BIG, FAT LIE OF CORONA TRIAL PROSECUTORS!

The credibility of the prosecution in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona is now HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE.

All because of LYING THROUGH THEIR TEETH in a vain attempt to deny their MALICIOUS REVELATION to the media of 45 properties allegedly owned by Corona.

For those who BLINDLY BELIEVE in the prosecution and have prejudged the trial:

Sen. Francis Escudero noted that while the prosecution had announced the 45 properties, he has only counted a total of 24, six of which were parking slots. Lead prosecutor Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. said the 45 properties came from the Land Registration Authority (LRA) and not from the prosecution.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada then asked Tupas who released the 45 properties to the media. Tupas claimed it was not the prosecution.

Television stations, however, replayed a pre-trial prosecution press conference wherein the prosecution was revealing the 45 properties.

Prompting Estrada to add:  “They are making us believe, making the public believe, that there are 45 properties owned by Chief Justice but when they came here, it turns out there are only 24. Do not lie.”

Confronted by a reporter with the press conference, prosecution spokesman Rep. Miro Quimbo could only say it was not his recollection of the press conference.

The DECEPTION speaks for itself.

From now on, anyone who will continue taking the word of the prosecution as Gospel truth will commit one of the BIGGEST MISTAKES of their lives.

This is indisputable proof that right from the start, the prosecution has been trying to BRAINWASH us or CONDITION our minds int believing Corona’s guilt.

I’m not saying that no one should believe the prosecution anymore.

What I’m driving at, as what I have called for several times already, is draw  your conclusions on the trial BASED ON SOLID, UNDENIABLE EVIDENCE.

Not on who gets more press releases published or longer airtime on television or radio. Press releases are NOT PROOF, OR EVEN A GAUGE, of TRUTH. FAIRNESS dictates that one should listen to and evaluate the evidence of both sides first before coming up with a decision.

Let me repeat, the prosecution DOES NOT HAVE a monopoly of truth in Corona’s impeachment.

Nobody does. ONLY GOD has!

SOLID PROOF OF PNOY'S POOR PERFORMANCE!

Here’s indisputable proof that Pnoy is PERFORMING POORLY, and not focusing enough, on the economy.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) reported that from 2.9 million unemployed in 2010 or 7.3 percent, unemployed Filipinos in 2011 remained at about 2.8 million Filipinos or 7 percent.

Or only 100,000 NEW JOBS!

Pnoy has four-and-half years left in office. At that rate, and here’s honestly hoping this will drastically change, we can only expect 450,000 more new jobs until Pnoy’s term ends.

Worse, the NSO report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer website revealed that workers looking for a second job or longer working hours increased from 18.8 to 19.3 percent in 2011.

We’re talking of a YEAR’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS, people, with the admission being made by no less than the leading government agency for statistics.

This ALARMING revelation follows long-running observations by various sectors of the very low priority being given by Pnoy to the economy.

Among others:

NOT EVEN ONE major infrastructure project since Pnoy took office 19 months ago;

NO DETAILED or CLEAR-CUT job generation program;

SKY-HIGH prices of oil products, electricity, food and basic commodities, with no clear solutions on how to make even one of these more affordable to the common man.

Pnoy and his aides have NEVER RUN OF SPECIFIC things to say against or issues to throw at their perceived or political enemies. Even if they’re not the party directly involved like the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

But HARDLY, if ever, do they say anything specific on how to solve the country’s major problems and make life better for us.

There have been a lot of promises, like so many billions of pesos for this or that, or so many public works projects up for bidding. But just that, GENERIC PROMISES!

Which brings me back to something I had written in an earlier blog –WHERE IS THE PEOPLE’S MONEY?  Tax collection and other revenue generating efforts have NEVER BEEN SUSPENDED by Pnoy.

This is Pnoy’s ‘tuwid na daan,’ ladies and gentlemen. Our ‘tuwid na daan’ sa KAHIRAPAN!

PNOY GIVES BLESSINGS TO VIDEO PIRATES!

Pnoy has just given his BLESSINGS to video piracy.

He is not firing Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas, even though the official had been CAUGHT IN THE ACT of buying pirated DVDs.in a mall in Quezon City.

Not only that, Pnoy says he continues to trust Llamas, for the simple reason that what had happened was not connected to his being a political adviser,

So, even ILLEGAL merchandise can be ACCEPTABLE in the ‘tuwid na daan.’

Following that line of thinking, any other Malacanang official can patronize ANYTHING UNLAWFUL and get away with it, as long as it’s not related to his or her job.

For example, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda can go into and bet on illegal cockpits or casinos, or his deputy Abigail Valte can buy counterfeit bags and shoes and it’’s perfectly alright for Pnoy.

Video pirates and counterfeiters NOW KNOW who to sell their products to.

As long as the buyer is one of Pnoy’s close aides, they have nothing to worry about.

Talk about anti-piracy campaigns.

With his RETENTION and CONTINUED TRUST on Llamas, Pnoy has made it CRYSTAL CLEAR that his ‘tuwid na daan’ is nothing more than a SELECTIVE implementation of the law.

So don’t be surprised, people if movie producers suddenly SLOW DOWN or SUSPEND production INDEFINITELY.

Simply because if video pirates and their patrons , like Llamas, can do their thing and get away with it, there’s no sane reason for them to continue business.

Jobs in the industry and the livelihood of suppliers will be at risk Economic displacement won’t be far behind.

Whoever will be affected will be ON THEIR OWN.

Believe me, Pnoy or any other Malacanang boss will not take any blame when that happens.

I wonder if Kris Aquino even tried to fight for her colleagues in the movie industry over the Llamas fiasco. I wonder if she even said anything at all, since it’s them who will be affected.

Better find out, movie idols. You should know where you stand. 30

DRILON TO THE RESCUE, AGAIN!

It’s getting harder to believe that Sen. Franklin Drilon is not for the prosecution in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

The prosecution miserably failed to prove that the reduced price given to Corona for his penthouse unit at the Belagio was anomalous or illegal. .

The marketing boss of Belagio developer Megaworld categorically testified that the price reduction was not for any favor from Corona or the Supreme Court.

He also explained the reasons for the reduced price.

When the defense was already cross-examining the witness, and other senators were questioning the relevance of the reduced price, Drilon rose and said the issue is the truthfulness and accuracy of  Corona’s statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN)

I’m not saying that Drilon’s argument is wrong. However, take note, ladies and gentlemen:

Drilon stood up ONLY when it became obvious that the prosecution was being demolished by the witness’ testimony after more than 40 minutes of direct examination or questioning.

Whether he admits it or not, Drilon SAVED THE FACE, and the credibility, not only of the private prosecutor but of the entire prosecution with his reminder.

Anybody correct me if I’m wrong but as a judge, Drilon should only ask questions which are STRICTLY NEUTRAL and would not be of help in any way to either the prosecution or the defense.

Imagine what the public impression and perception on the prosecution would have been in the coming days of the trial had Drilon not spoken to the effect that they weren’t really wrong with their move.

Making t worse is it was the second time that Drilon had done something seemingly favorable to the prosecution.

Early in the trial it was Drilon, and NOT THE PROSECUTION, who questioned, and eventually elicited from the Supreme Court clerk of court the information that she had with her the SALN of Corona during her testimony.

Judge for yourselves, guys.
